Horn of Africa – Impact of the Yemen Crisis – the United States Provides an additional $6.1 Million to Support Humanitarian Response

The United States is pleased to announce more than $6 million in additional life-saving humanitarian assistance for those fleeing the conflict in Yemen and seeking refuge in Djibouti and Somalia.  This new funding brings the total U.S. humanitarian assistance for the Yemen region in FY 2015 to date to nearly $81 million.

This funding is a contribution to the Djibouti and Somalia portions of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) Yemen Situation Supplementary Appeal.  The additional funding will allow UNHCR to provide refugees in Somalia and Djibouti with shelter, access to clean water and sanitation facilities, health care, essential household items, legal assistance, programs which protect children, and activities to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.

The United States commends Djibouti and Somalia for keeping their borders open to those fleeing violence.  We will continue to work closely with humanitarian organizations and with countries in the region assisting those fleeing Yemen.
